Some writers have a saying that one should only write about what one knows. In a similar way, I have finally come to believe that I should only draw, paint, or etch what truly captivates my own imagination at its core. So, while I do paint salt marshes, old rickety houses, and ancient trees, I always am drawn to painting people. Young people and old people (especially). Formal portraits and captured moments. Real people or purely imaginary ones. Happy people and those nearly crushed by life. And, of course, the human figure, clothed, costumed — and otherwise. Above all else, I strive for two things: Beauty and Craftsmanship. Thanks be to the artists who have shown me how it’s done: Rembrant, Whistler, Homer, Richard Gibney, Allen Sloane, David Curtis, classic antiquity, the whole Renaissance and modern masters.
