Goetemann Artist Residency (GAR)
The Goetemann Artist Residency fosters innovation and courageous artistic experimentation within a nurturing community that supports cultural tolerance and the exchange of new ideas.
The Rocky Neck Art Colony is a non-profit organization that nurtures excellence in the arts and celebrates the artistic history and culture of Rocky Neck. One of the oldest working art communities in the U.S., Rocky Neck sits on the harbor of Gloucester, Mass. Today Rocky Neck is home to many contemporary working artists and galleries, and is the site for exhibitions, workshops, residencies and a calendar of cultural events.
The Goetemann Artist Residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony celebrates diversity and creativity and seeks a range of the art of our time. It provides each of three visual artists and one environmental/installation artist with a four-week stay in a two-level, live-work studio with access to the rich cultural community of Gloucester. Selected artists demonstrate a high caliber of work, originality and seriousness of purpose. Given that we select only one artist for each of our month residencies, the Goetemann Artist Residency Committee (composed of eight artists) assists to engage the residents for as much or as little interaction as they request during their stay. Notable is a welcome dinner with the committee at one of our homes at the beginning of each residency.
Celebrating its 17th year in 2021, the Goetemann Artist Residency was founded by Gloucester painter and teacher, Gordon Goetemann (pronounced GET-a-min) in 2004 and renamed in his honor in 2010.
The Environmental/Installation Artist residency is scheduled for August 29-Sept. 25, 2021.
The other Artist residencies for 2021 have been filled and are being adjusted in response to Covid 19.

Goetemann Artist Residencies
There are five open months (May, June, July, September, October) for one artist at a time (the artist can tell us in the application process which month works best). Typically, September is held for the Environmental/Installation Artist. The Residency artists have focused on painting, mixed media, works on paper, photography and video—in 2018 we hosted a sound artist. The studio does not have any technical facilities for film making or printing, but a printing studio does exist nearby (use requires a separate fee). Artists wishing to do anything of a technical nature would need to bring their own equipment.
Environmental/Installation Artist Residency
Launched in 2017, the Goetemann Environmental/Installation Artist residency is designed to bring art out of the studio and make it both visible and accessible to the public. The Residency supports the creation of a site-specific installation that engages the public and draws attention to questions and challenges posed by environmental policies, politics, and/or social change. The current non-profit partner is nearby Ocean Alliance (www.whale.org), an organization dedicated to the conservation of whales and their marine environment through research and education.

The Residency studio sits on the Smith Cove waterfront in the heart of the Rocky Neck Art Colony. There is privacy for working but just outside the door is a vibrant community of working artists and galleries. The Cultural Center, hub of the Rocky Neck Art Colony, is the site for talks as well as ongoing art exhibitions. Downtown Gloucester, a picturesque working harbor, is 10 minutes away with the Cape Ann Museum, galleries, shops and restaurants. Beautiful beaches abound on Cape Ann. Seascapes are just outside the Residency studio. Boston is an hour away by train. It is strongly suggested that artists have a car. A bicycle is available.

Facilities & Services
- Housing: Private housing (individual apartment/cabin/house)
The studio is a private space on two floors of roughly 500 square feet, located on Madfish Wharf. There is public access to a deck overlooking Smith Cove and Gloucester harbor. The downstairs working space features spotlights on the ceiling with direct light toward white homasote walls. Also, downstairs are a galley kitchen (with stove, microwave, cabinets, sink and refrigerator) and bathroom. Upstairs is a single bed and a small dresser. Laundromat services are nearby.

Residents have a kitchen and are responsible for their own meals. Groceries and restaurants are easily accessible from the studio.

Residency Fees
None. Artists are accepted to the Goetemann Artist Residency without regard for their ability to contribute financially to their residency. A contribution is requested but not required. Meals and transportation to and from the Residency are not included.
Stipends / other support
Volunteer members of the Residency Committee act as a support system for the artist, offering logistical help and informational resources. There is a $300 stipend for the Environmental/Installation Artist.
Additional expectations / opportunities
The artists give an opening talk (via Zoom) at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center, to introduce their artwork to the local community. At the end of the month, a group gathers in the residency studio for an informal conversation and summation of the month’s work. Residents may, at their option, elect to open the studio to interact with the community at times of their choosing. (Covid-19 restrictions may apply.)
