The Rocky Neck Art Colony Selects Kathleen Volp as the season’s Second Summer ArtistSculptor, mixed media artist and former Goetemann residency artist, Kathleen Volp will exhibit work from a series called The Politics of Fear at Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck from June 14 until July 4. The public is invited to meet the artist at the Opening Reception on Saturday, June 17, from 6 to 8 pm at Gallery 53, 53 Rocky Neck Ave., Gloucester, MA.

The series “Politics of Fear” reflects the deep anxiety Volp has been feeling since the recent election. “I have been disturbed by the trend of political leaders to link policy to personal identity, specifically an overtly dominant and angry maleness”, says Volp. To express this anxiety Volp created a series of assemblages from objects in her studio. “The idea that macho showmanship has replaced rational thought is at the heart of these pieces”, explained Volp.

Originally from the Midwest, Kathleen Volp studied with renowned conceptual artist Siah Armajani and kinetic artist Cork Marcheschi at the Minneapolis School of Art and Design. She received her BA from SUNY Empire State in NYC before settling in New England. Her work is exhibited widely, most recently in Still Life Lives! at the Fitchburg Art Museum and solo exhibitions at the Griffin Museum of Photography and Bromfield Gallery, Boston MA. Volp lives and works in the Boston area.
