“The temporal quality of plein air painting marks my relationship to time, geography, and
season concurrent to my subject matter. Each brushstroke accounts for one moment in
time slowly accumulating into a painting representative of a day spent withstanding the
natural elements of the forest. My still and silent painting stance mirrors the posture of the
tree; a healthy reminder that I, too, am a part of this ecological system.” -Amanda

Sixty works are on display including more than 14 sculptures, nine photographs, a selection of digital art as well as paintings, drawings and prints. Artists are from Oregon, Colorado, Louisiana and New England.
Juror Barbara Moody says that making a selection from almost 200 entries was quite the challenge: “I chose the most intriguing works that fit the theme of Wild Things: Known and Imagined,” says Moody. “Ultimately, I was forced to omit most of the domestic animals, birds and scenic environments even though they could be considered ‘wild.’ I was attracted most by those works that were unusual, curious, provocative and/or unique. “

The Rocky Neck Art Colony is thrilled to present this compelling array of 40 works by 30 artists reflecting a diversity of mediums and subject matter. It is a happy diversion we can all use right now. Claire Sanford, juror
In the Moment: Five Photographers Capture and Create
Exhibition Dates: August 1 through October 15, 2020
Virtual Opening Reception: Sunday, August 16 at 4:00 PM
Each of these photographers — Tsar Fedorsky, Paul Cary Goldberg, Olivia Parker, Dana Salvo, Rebecca Skinner — asks the observer to look closely at just how long a moment can last. It might be a mother and child sharing a conversation in the street or a rock that teeters forever on the beach. Small wonders are revealed in buttons, the bright blue geometry of an industrial wall, and in paint holding the past in its peels—before it flakes away forever. In the Moment unites the viewer, the instant captured and the photographer’s eye.

November 29 – December 22, 2019
Opening Reception: Sunday, December 1, 2:00-4:00 PM
Gallery Hours: Thursday-Sunday, 12:00- 4:00 pm
About State:
This past spring, Cape Ann’s cultural heritage was on display in an art exhibition curated by Gloucester resident Karen Tibbetts and displayed in the newly renovated Senate lobby at the State House in Boston. Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) is pleased to re-create this exhibition that includes work by artists from Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester.
The exhibition is diverse, with the 14 selected Cape Ann artists ranging from well-established living and deceased artists to young emerging talent and includes, Kathleen Gerden Archer, Jill Armstrong, Jason Burroughs, Phil Cusumano, Barbara Duggan, Judith and Gordon Goetemann, Ken Knowles, Gayle Macklem, John Nesta, T.M. Nicholas, Eileen Oliver, Martha L Swanson and Jeff Weaver. The artwork ranges from traditional to contemporary.
According to Karen Tibbetts, “The diversity of these works represents the spirit of the legacy of Cape Ann’s art. These artists are not only preserving our landscape, our maritime heritage, they are promoting it and passing it on to the next generation.” She continues, “Cape Ann has a long history of attracting talented artists. It’s so important for Cape Ann’s cultural heritage to be honored, recognized and promoted, near and far.”
Tibbetts hopes that this exhibition represents the hundreds of artists who are dedicated to preserving and carrying on the area’s artistic legacy, all the while showing the importance of art in people’s lives.
About Snyder:
This exhibition presents artwork created by six participants of the recent August 2019, Joan Snyder Workshop—offered by RNAC’s Goetemann Artist Residency (GAR), Distinguished/Artist Teacher Program. Each year beginning in 2007 the GAR committee invited a well-known artist to come to Gloucester to lead a workshop. This year Joan Snyder, whose work is currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, was that leader.
RNAC collaborates with the Cape Ann Museum where the selected artist delivers a free lecture that is open to the community (see Snyder video here) followed by a four-day workshop. For the past two years, the workshop has been held at spacious Montserrat studios in Beverly, MA.
During the course of the four days, in addition to holding group gatherings and discussions, Snyder visited with each artist as they worked. By participating in this exhibition at the Cultural Center, artists who took the workshop share their work and experience. It is meant to give the viewer a glimpse of the range of the artwork produced during the workshop. Although some are finished, most are not intended to be viewed as finished works.

Countless forms of destruction are seen throughout our world. Natural disasters tear up the landscape, pushing buildings into the sea and boats to the mountains. The economy fluctuates from financial security into debt and poverty. Addiction leads to neglect and loss, and eviction plagues most social classes. It is when the light shines through the devastation that humanity expresses its deepest secrets, needs, and resilience.
The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) is pleased to explore these themes through the creative eyes of the three artists featured in Eviction | Destruction | Renewal: An Exhibition About Resiliency. In this exhibition, artists Susan Greer Emmerson, Tatiana Flis, and Rebecca Skinner share their perspectives on darkness, loss, and renewal of the human condition. By combining photography, sculpture, drawing and mixed-media installations each artists takes their personal reflections and shares unique stories about the worlds we create. The imagery ranges across abandoned buildings, demolished homes, and stoic figures to create a dynamic visual experience.
The exhibition runs for six weeks beginning Thursday, June 20 and continues through Sunday, July 28, 2019 at the Cultural Center on Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street in East Gloucester. This show is open each Thursday through Sunday, 12:00-6:00 PM. in the upper gallery of the Cultural Center.

Each artist works in a different medium: painting, drawing and puppets, fiber arts, photography, and reconstructed personal history. When viewed together, artists Christy Park, Rosella Sagall, Delphine Zohn, Linda Bourke, and Rochelle Zohn present an intriguing view of the magic of interpreted stories. Each of the artists has a different perspective on the theme:
- Linda Bourke (drawing and puppets), “As a good Catholic kid, I read books about the Saints. I became fascinated by the war of extremes they portray and by the way the stories morphed, passed along by illiterate churchgoers with only dramatic frescoes and statues to rely on for narrative truth.”
- Christy Park (photography), “Reality doesn’t make any sense in art so we are always trying to discern between what we see and what we think we see. In the end we choose something in between.”
- Rosella Sagall (reconstructed personal history), “I find that facing thoughts or even fears about climate change is better than trying to ignore them. I do love the beauty of the world and try to appreciate it every day to counter dealing with some of the ugliness.”
- Rochelle Zohn (fiber arts), “It is a challenging, engaging, dynamic and meditative passion. It is my time made visible.”
- Delphine Zohn (painting), “From infanthood through death, people we are in contact with absorb into our identities as we grow. Ideology, mannerisms, even facial expressions are things most of us pick up from others throughout our lives, ever evolving as parts of ourselves.”

Art from the Soul
Art from the Soul is an exhibition of contemporary paintings created by a group of 9 artists who view the creative process as intimately connected to one’s individual inner emotions, including the soul.
April 12 – May 13, 2018
Internationally known artist Nella Lush from North Andover, MA acts as mentor and guide to a small group of painters who call themselves Art from the Soul. The painters have created a supportive community with a common approach – they paint from within. The members in this exhibition, curated by Nella Lush, are Lorrie Berry from Wenham, Annalee Johnson from Newburyport, Ingrid Johnson from Ipswich, Cindy Journey from Manchester by the Sea, Carmela Martin from Beverly Farms, Candace Mitchell from Newburyport, Karen Rovner from North Andover and Linda Tasker from Newbury.
Ms. Lush comments “Rarely, if ever, does our group use external references to any degree to initiate our work, but we draw from our deep emotions rooted within us that ultimately fuel our expressive art.” Most of the artists in the group were trained academically but after many years the nagging urge to explore and to free themselves from rules and constraints enabled them to start their journey with the group “Art from the Soul” – www.artfromthesoul.org.

Recent Exhibitions
Exuberance: The Marvelous Art of Craft
Exhibition Dates: October 15, 2020, to January 10, 2021
This exhibition shows the variety of voices that express themselves through craft – some with skills and experience, some with spontaneity and improvisation. The common thread that ties this work together is heart and exuberance, along with color, pattern and movement. This work does not want to sit still or hide in a corner, nor should it.

FIVE—Points of View
March 28 to May 5, 2019
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 30, 2:00-4:00 PM
FIVE—Points of View is an exhibition by five women working in different media are connected to one another not only as friends and family but also by a shared interest in narrative-based images. The public is invited to celebrate the creativity of these artists at the Opening Reception on Saturday, March 30 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. View the art, meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments, drink and lively conversation along the way.
